Oura Ring to Track Early Signs of Hypertension

Oura Ring or Oura Health Oy, the Finnish smart ring maker, is launching a Blood Pressure Profile study later this year to detect early signs of hypertension without showing actual blood pressure readings. The study will passively track users’ physiological signals through the ring and provide a likelihood assessment of hypertension.

Ricky Bloomfield, Oura’s chief medical officer, said, “This study will refine and validate a future feature for FDA clearance. It explores how Oura can identify early signs of hypertension by tracking signals in the background, helping members uncover hidden risks before they become serious.” Participants will answer a short questionnaire about family history, medications, and lifestyle habits. The system will alert users if they show no, moderate, or major signs of hypertension, and encourage professional care if needed.

The study, approved by the Institutional Review Board, will launch at Oura Labs in the U.S. later this year. Oura emphasizes that the ring’s finger placement allows more accurate physiological readings compared to wrist-worn devices. This follows Apple’s similar FDA-cleared hypertension detection for the Apple Watch.

Redesigned Oura App Adds Stress Tracking and Health Insights

Oura also introduced a redesigned app with a new Cumulative Stress feature and enhanced health tracking. The app now has three tabs: “Today” for daily insights, “Vitals” for sleep, stress, and cardiovascular trends, and “My Health” for long-term well-being. Users can track habits and routines to understand their health impacts.

Jason Russell, Oura VP of Consumer Software Product, explained, “Cumulative Stress measures how the body responds to prolonged stress using heart rate, sleep micro-motions, temperature, and activity data. It’s updated weekly, giving a clear picture of long-term stress impacts.”

The app also expands menstrual cycle insights, showing a 12-month view of periods and fertility windows and providing predictions from just one night of sleep. The updates will be available globally for Oura Ring Gen3 and Ring 4 devices in the coming weeks.

Along with the app refresh, Oura recently raised $900 million in funding, launched the Ring 4 Ceramic collection, introduced its first charging case, and added Health Panels for scheduling blood work. The company is pushing forward in proactive health monitoring, helping users track stress and cardiovascular risks more comprehensively.
